The festive period can be a sad, distressing and lonely time for someone who is homeless or experiencing hardship. Over the last 47 years Aberdeen Cyrenians has been doing everything possible to tackle homelessness, and each Christmas we do all we can to make this time of year more comfortable for our service users.
This year has once again seen a significant rise in the number of people accessing our services. Our Drop In service alone is seeing around 400 appointments per month and issuing an average of 150 food parcels every month, as well as handing out other essentials like clothes, toiletries and sleeping bags.
As you begin to think about Christmas and what it will mean for you, your family and your friends, please take a moment to consider what it could mean for those in our community who have no home to go to this festivce season.
One of the most important things we can offer at this time of year is a warm, welcoming, friendly festive environment for our service users. We do this by opening our Street Alternatives service every single day over Christmas and New Year to offer free meals, access to showers and laundry facilities, and a Christmas meal and gift for every service user.
Throughout 2015 we have received incredible support from people across the North East during what has been a difficult time for many businesses, individuals and families. Last year the people of the North East rallied round and supported us by donating goods and money worth around £60,000 to help run our services over the festive period. With more people accessing our services for advice, information and practical support, we are appealing for your help to match or even exceed that total this year.
Financial donations allow us to buy items as the need arises over the Christmas period and beyond. In addition monetary donations are very welcome to offset increased running costs incurred over the festive period for the additional cooking, heating and lighting associated with our longer opening times.
Without the generosity of the local community we would not be able to continue our work over Christmas and beyond, any contribution you can provide will make a real difference to our services.
We hope you will have a happy and memorable Christmas, and that you may consider supporting us to help make Christmas happy and memorable for our service users too.
